First Day Letter

HW: course outline signed / letters home due Sunday


Hey Period 4!

This will be a space where everyday a different student will capture what happens in class and read their blog the next day. This is our blog and my version of what we did on Thursday. 

Everyone logged into our Zoom class and as people came in, we changed names and pronouns to let everyone know what we want to be called. 

I took attendance, and I was glad to see that I knew most of you already from sixth and seventh grade. I'm so excited to have you as my English students now!

After attendance, I went over the class syllabus and talked everyone through the class expectations and rules. Then, we went over the materials we need (the tech you need to connect, a notebook, things to write with and books books). 

We went over the first few units of study for The Outsiders, Inside Out and Back Again, and NaNoWriMo. 

Next, I read my letter to students. I can't wait for you all to write back! 

We came up with our blog name and after much debate and two votes, we decided on Chum Bucket!

That was pretty much it for our first day. We talked about the schedule for Friday and Monday. A few students stuck around to ask questions, and that was it for the day.

AGENDA Notebook/Blog Set-Up Q. Q. Song What good readers do: The Outsiders Ch. 1 -4 HW: Read and write RJs for Ch.1 - 4 I was the first to volunteer, for some reason, so now everyone will be nice to me, ha, ha. Ms. Nakada had us label our notebooks and start the table of contents. Every time I'm on Zoom, I kinda laugh because looking at the people staring at the screen looks like the hamster meme(lol). Next, we set up our journal: agenda, homework, the quote, the question, and the song of the week. This feels weird typing and doing work at the same time. It's a tad difficult, but it's fine. The quote was from Ralph Waldo Emerson. I thought the quote meant was that even though the world that want you to be happy as somebody that you are not, staying true to yourself and not being something else to live up to societies standards is an accomplishment and is enough to be proud of. Good morning, today during class I got chosen to do the blog. Which I wasn’t too excited about, but I will give it my best shot. Today, in our journals we started our week four page. First, we wrote our agenda and homework. Then, we wrote our quotes of the week because there were two quotes: "Nothing gold can stay" by Robert Frost v. "Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold." Then, we discussed which quote we liked more.  Then we wrote our question of the week: How should parents handle a bad report card? We listened to the song of the week which was "Fast Car" by Tracy Chapman.  Finally, we discussed and wrote an elements of plot line for chapter 8 of The Outsiders .
